Community Bicycle Mechanic

The Community Bicycle Mechanic is a fun and challenging position that allows you to share your love of bikes with volunteers, customers, and community members, in a shop environment. This position will be essential to fostering an inclusive and diverse community of cyclists.

The Community Bicycle Mechanic will support the operation of New Hope Community Bikes through the delivery of quality services and programs, integrating shop activities with community programming.

Reports to: Executive Director

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Bicycle mechanics

  • Building community among customers, volunteers, program participants and staff

  • Support community programs

  • Other tasks as required

 General Duties:

  • Repair customer bicycles and complete work orders

  • Refurbish donated bicycles

  • Foster relationships with customers, volunteers, and community partners

  • Support volunteers and customers in bicycle repairs and general cycling education

  • Facilitate meaningful, helpful, and pleasant conversations with customers, volunteers, staff, program participants and donors

  • Maintain Standards: Safe and clean work environment, compliance with procedures, rules, and regulations, quality education, quality service

 Shop Duties:

  • Engage customers and conduct quality and honest repair services

  • Contribute to maintaining a healthy supply of inventory

  • Contribute to the development of systems and procedures:

    • Intake and storage of bicycles

    • Health and safety

    • Inventory management (maintain equipment, parts/supplies and inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level and anticipate need)

Administration:

  • Maintain accurate record keeping: Information gathering, inventory numbers, reporting and evaluation

  • Respond to inquiries (phone/text messaged and emails)

Qualifications:

  • Must have a strong commitment to the values and mission of New Hope Community Bikes

  • Strong bike mechanic knowledge and ability to repair, explain, and educate about bikes

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Comfortable working with a wide variety of community members

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills (excellent Microsoft Office skills; database management and comfort with confidential files considered an asset)

  • Ability to work independently and resolve problems on ones’ own

  • Committed to professionalism, thoroughness, dependability, flexibility and being a strong, positive role model

  • Ability to work flexible hours/days and in a variety of settings (within the shop and in the community)

Terms:

  • This position is based at New Hope Community Bikes at 1249 Main Street East, Hamilton, ON

  • This is a full-time, temporary (seasonal) position: 37.5 hours/week

  • 8-hour day shifts with flexibility for evening work. Saturday availability is required.

  • Salary Range: $19-$22/hour
